Considered a pioneer in endoscopic spinal surgery, John C. Chiu, MD, serves as the medical director for the California Center for Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery and California Spine Institute Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, California. When not working, John C. Chiu, MD, enjoys participating in martial arts and is a grand master in kung fu, jujitsu, and ninjutsu. He also earned accolades from the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame and received the International Martial Arts Living Legend Award.
Based in the Netherlands, the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame seeks to honor experts, masters, and grandmasters for their work in martial arts. The organization honors individuals every other year. The 2016 awards took place on April 1 and April 2 in Asperen, Netherlands.
For the 2016 awards, various masters and grandmasters from more than 15 countries came to teach their own martial arts, including krav maga, kung fu, karate, and taekwondo. Every person in attendance had a chance to attend six of the 30 different classes. A special guest at the event was Semmy Schilt, who is a five-time kickboxing world champion and four-time K1 world champion.
